Why can't the Dems get anything done?

Let's see: 7 months after voting them into office, why is nearly every piece of legislation blocked, vetoed, or watered down? Do the numbers, folks. We pretty much have a dem/repub tie in the Senate. In order to pass any bills, we need a majority. In order to override the expected Bush veto, we need 2/3's of the Senate. What incentive is there among Republicans to stop partisan voting & cross the line? Not much. Think about some of the issues the Dems have raised over the last few months:
1. Homeland Security
2. The War in Iraq
3. Environmental Standards
4. Minimum Wage increases
5. Immigration changes
6. Campaign finance & ethics

Now think back to pre-Nov elections when the repubs were in control. What did we get? Big govt wiretapping US citizens, oil company tax breaks, severe reduction of environmental standards , torture or political prisoners, the outing of a CIA agent, an attempt to privatize Social Security, a flawed senior healthcare plan, misinformation, and corruption. The lack of progress seems to point to a couple things:
  • The next election needs to increase the number of democrats in both House & Senate
  • Based on their agenda, Repubs are anti-labor & against the welfare of the people
  • Based on their agenda, Dems are anti-big business & support a limited social agenda
  • Big business & special interests have bought & paid for so many of our leaders that major campaign finance & ethics reform should be a mandate

Let's Talk Politics

At some point, I decided it was time to create a political blog. Perhaps somewhere, in the steaming morass of non-reading, disinterested and confused US population, I could touch one person. Maybe, just maybe, they'd take a minute to read. Maybe, to react & get involved. My humble blog will attempt:
1. To be concise
2. To be timely
3. To use real data & citations

Only time will tell if I'm successful.
